FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CAMERA AND CONSUMPTION: CZECH ARTIST IN TAIPEI CITY

TAIPEI, TAIWAN, July 28, 2014 – Josef Bares, an emerging Czech-German media artist

has been invited by the Taipei Artist Village as an artist-in-residence between June and

August 2014. Josef Bares will present two works: «Going Shopping» during the Open

Studio Weekend at Taipei Artist Village (August 8-9), an installation showcasing the

fresh-from-the-press limited edition photo zine «Consumption» initiated during his stay.

One week later, the exhibition «Movement Series: Approach», featuring a 2-channel

video-installation investigating movement within and between cities, will open at Cross

Gallery in Treasure Hill Artist Village (August 16 – September 14). Details below.

«Going Shopping» August 8-9, 2014, 14:00-18:00 Open Studio (302) at Taipei Artist

Village.

The open studio pop-up exhibition showcases the June and July editions a location-
specific photo zine «Consumption» in the form of an installation. This project looks at

Taipei through the framework of personal consumer decisions. The decision what to

photograph is directly derived from a prior decision what to buy. The experience of the

city is reverse-engineered through an expense record analysis, providing a new flavor

to psychogeographic methods, which investigate the effects of geographic settings onto

the mood and behavior. Photographs of building facades with storefronts are juxtaposed

with photographs of receipts that provide the entry point into an imaginary narrative.

«Movement Series: Approach» August 16 – September 16, 2014, Cross Gallery,

Treasure Hill Artist Village. Opening Reception on August 16 at 5:30pm.

The 2-channel video-installation is a new instance of an ongoing series investigating

movement in and between cities. Travel and commutes are often a collective

experience where movement is a common denominator of a group in the same

transport vehicle on the same route. The installation captures micro-moments frozen in

time, creating an opportunity to contemplate how we keep and recall memories related

to movement. As Michel de Certeau states in his book Practice of Everyday Life, “a

space exists when one takes into consideration vectors of direction, velocities, and time

variables.”

Josef Bares is an emerging Czech-German media artist and recipient of numerous

awards, including Leinemann Award (2009), Essl Award (2011) and Vienna Insurance

Group Special Invitation (2011). His artworks have been exhibited across continents,

for example Germany, Austria, Russia and USA. He holds degrees in Economics and

Fine Arts and is currently conducting doctoral research on attention economy and public

space at the School of Creative Media of City University of Hong Kong. Find out more at
